Immerse Yourself in Venice Beach’s Vibrant Art Scene

Drawing inspiration from its namesake sister city in Italy, Venice Beach is home to an eclectic mix of arts and culture in all types of mediums. From celebratory drum circles and parades to edgy galleries and an array of live performances, Venice Beach culture has much to offer for any visitor interested in exploring a unique, laid-back cultural scene during their Los Angeles vacation.

Places to Check Out Arts and Culture in Venice Beach

As you traverse Venice Beach, you’ll likely see a number of street artists and murals. Mural tours are available, though you can also embark on a self-guided tour of Venice Beach’s art.

Some of the most notable artistic spots in Venice Beach include a variety of street art installations. The Venice Art Walls are an interactive piece of public art located along Ocean Front Walk. Once a part of the Venice Pavilion built in 1961, the walls had been unofficially (then later officially) renamed to reflect their beautiful graffiti murals. Although the graffiti was technically illegal, it was so beloved by locals that the police allowed it, and now visitors and locals alike can add to the Venice Beach art walls themselves.

The Venice Art Plaza is also a wonderful place to check out, as it contains the S.P.A.R.C. art center, a literary education and performance center called Beyond Baroque, and the live performance Pacific Resident Theatre. Galleries specializing in all ranges of art can be found. Take a stroll through the Sculpture Gardens on Abbot Kinney Blvd., or attend the free Venice Art Crawl to see as many galleries as you can.

Venice Beach also has a long history of being a haven for musicians. There are several bars which Jim Morrison used to frequent back in the 1960s, and many bars still which host modern live musicians. The Brig has a house jazz band with a local following, while The Venice Beach Bar, Hinano’s Café, Townhouse and the Del Monte Speakeasy, and Brennan’s Pub have live music almost every night of the week. You’ll also find a number of free outdoor concerts, such as Venice Spring Fling in mid- to late May and Venice Beach Music Fest in late August, staples in Venice Beach culture.
