When you visit L.A., you really can’t miss the Hollywood Sign—even if you wanted to! The 44-foot tall and 352-foot long sign is situated on the side of Mount Lee in the Santa Monica Mountains, overlooking the Hollywood Hills area.

The sign was originally intended to advertise a residential housing development being built in the area, first bearing the name “HOLLYWOODLAND.” The original version had flashing lights and searchlights that would light the sign. It was only supposed to remain in place for a little over a year, but because of Hollywood’s Golden Age of Cinema, the sign gained significance in pop culture and became a mainstay in Los Angeles’ culture.

The sign’s location is in Griffith Park, one of the largest urban parks in all of North America and often seen as L.A.’s answer to Central Park in New York City. The Hollywood Sign is also just north of the Mulholland Highway and south of the famous Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Hollywood Hills where countless celebrities from all eras have been buried.

While there have been security measures in place to protect the Hollywood Sign from pranks and vandalism since the early 1990s, visitors can still get a glimpse of the famous Hollywood sign. Make your way to Lake Hollywood Park, a pleasant park with perfect views of Lake Hollywood and the Hollywood Sign.

If you’re a little braver and more of an experienced hiker, you can take the Wonder View Trail in the easternmost peak of Griffith Park. Additionally, you can see the sign from inside of Griffith Park at the Griffith Observatory for a nominal $4.00 per hour parking fee.

Other ways you can see the sign include the fourth-floor viewing deck at Hollywood and Highland and taking a horseback tour of the Hollyridge Trail, since humans are no longer allowed on the trail.
