The Hollywood Pantages Theater

When you think of tinsel town, chances are you think of television, movies, and of course, music. But did you know that we have a large and active theater community as well? It shouldn’t be that much of a surprise, knowing how talented the actors and performers that make their way to Hollywood every year are, and if you want to see something really special, a visit to the Hollywood Pantages Theater will be just the ticket!

Visiting the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles

Built in 1930, this venerable institution is famous for a lot of reasons, including the fact that it was the last building ever designed by one of our famous resident vaudevillians, Alexander Pantages. Designed in art deco style, the exterior only hints at the grandeur inside. High ceilings painted in cobalt blue and gold, red velvet seating, and crystal lights create a world of wonder for all its patrons.

Once owned by the famous recluse Howard Hughes, today the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles is famous for the world class Broadway shows that are performed there every season. It’s also suggested that he loved the theater so much that he never wanted to leave; his ghost is rumored to haunt the halls of the Pantages.

During the depression and for years after, it was a movie theater only; live performances cost too much to show in a time when guests rarely had any extra pennies to spare, yet alone what it would cost to go to a live show.

Currently showcasing popular plays such as On Your Feet, The Emilio and Gloria Estefan Broadway Musical, Waitress, Beautiful, A Bronx Tale, and Wicked are going to be shown in the upcoming months. Wicked begins in November and starts out 2019 with a bang; its run ends in January, opening the stage for more musical extravaganzas, including Hello Dolly, Kinky Boots, Cats, and our personal favorite, Les Misérables! Rent and Frozen are expected to join the stage next fall, and if you keep checking the Pantages Theater website, you can plan your Los Angeles trip to coincide with your favorite Broadway performance!
