Descanso Gardens at La Canada Flintridge

After your last adventure at the Sky Slide, you may feel the need to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground, and if that is the case, Descanso Gardens at La Canada Flintridge is just what the doctor ordered! Operated by the Descanso Gardens Guild, this exquisite national treasure wasn’t always a public site. Originally a private estate before it opened as the Descanso Gardens in 1950, it was about to be turned into a dump (or Disneyland!) after the original owner decided he wanted to retire, but the people of California took control instead, and history was made.

Visiting the Descanso Gardens in Los Angeles

With nine styles of gardens to explore, we can promise that another visit or three may be needed to ensure you see it all! From the fragrant rose and camellia gardens to the wooded oak forest to the ancient forest which contains only plants that are on the endangered list, the soothing appeal of the sights found here will wipe away your troubles.

In addition to the gardens that make up a huge portion of your tour, the building that was once the private estate on the grounds, known as the Boddy House after the original owner, is now used as a museum after being chosen to be the Pasadena Showcase for the Arts in 2007. Tours run daily from 10 AM until 4PM. The Sturt Haaga Gallery is also on the grounds, offering an ever-changing selection of exhibits to admire and moon over; it is open from 10AM until 4PM as well.

Tickets to the Descanso Gardens in Los Angeles are reasonably priced and fit into almost any vacation budget, costing $9 for adults, $6 for senior citizens (65 and over) and students, $4 for children 5-12, and kids under 5 are free. An Enchanted Railroad offers a chance to ride as you tour part of the gardens for an added fee of $3 per person, or you can buy a book of 10 tickets for $25, giving you a $5 savings.

A gift shop on the premises sells home and garden supplies and trinkets as well as books, tee shirts, and hats. We’ve seen boutiques on Rodeo Drive not as well stocked as the Descanso Gardens Gift Shop! You might want to make sure to leave some room in your suitcase for all the treasures you just can’t live without.

All this exploration will probably make you hungry, and fortunately for you, the Descanso Café offers sandwiches, desserts, ice cream, beer, and wine, helping to create a perfect day in paradise.
