Beyond engaging in the iconic pastime of surfing its excellent waves, you can gain more insight into the unique history of this idyllic, swoon-worthy city and foster a greater appreciation for your vacation destination by visiting the historic Adamson House and the Malibu Lagoon Museum.
Details on the Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum
Nicknamed the Taj Mahal of Tile, the Adamson House and the land surrounding it (which was once known as Vaquero Hill during the nineteenth century) features exquisite coastline views and an intriguing museum dedicated to Malibu’s history.
Spanish Revival and Moorish Revival architecture, replete with colorful tiles and handcrafted artistry, characterize this incredible historic home, which once served as the vacation residence then full-time residence of wealthy Bostonian businessman Frederick Hastings Rindge of Ridge Ranch and his family. The house is two stories tall and has ten rooms for visitors to explore, including a bathhouse that was once used as a Coast Guard headquarters during World War II. The home also has an expansive network of gorgeous flower gardens, perfectly preserved from their original appearance during the 1930s.
The Malibu Lagoon Museum adjacent to the Adamson House has an extensive collection of documents, photographs, and artifacts related to the history of Malibu. From the era of the Chumash tribe to Spanish colonialism and the Malibu Railroad, visitors will find a little bit of everything in terms of what categories are covered in this museum.
Admission prices for the museum range from free for children ages five years and under to $7.00 for adults ages seventeen years and older. The museum is cash only for admission and tour fees, so be sure to stop by the ATM before visiting. It’s also recommended that you call ahead and make reservations if you plan on bringing a group of ten or more people with you.
